Sumatra Surftrip

Last updated 16 September 2026 · Sumatra Surf Trip, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia

1. Who we are

Sumatra Surf Trip operates surf charters in the Mentawai Islands, the Telo Islands and North Sumatra, aboard the vessels Melaleuca and Kaimana. Trips depart from Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. In these terms, we and us mean Sumatra Surf Trip, and you means the person making the booking and everyone named on it.

2. Making a booking

A booking is confirmed when we have received your deposit and sent you a written confirmation. Until then, dates are held but not reserved. The person who makes the booking is responsible for the whole party, including passing on information we send and making sure the details given to us are correct.

3. Payment

Trips are priced per person and start at USD 2,300 for an eleven night charter. A deposit is due at the time of booking and the balance is due before departure. We will state both amounts and both dates in your booking confirmation, and those are the amounts that apply to your trip.

4. What the price includes

Airport transfers in Padang, all meals and non-alcoholic drinks aboard, 30 beers per guest, your surf guide, equipment aboard and applicable taxes.

Not included: international and domestic flights, travel insurance, hotels before or after the trip, the optional photography package, crew tips and the Mentawai surfing tax, which is collected locally.

5. Your responsibilities

You must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, a return ticket and valid travel insurance. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover surfing and medical evacuation. You are responsible for your own visa.

Surfing in these islands carries real risk. Reef breaks are shallow, the locations are remote and medical help is hours away. You must be able to catch waves independently. Absolute beginners are not accepted.

6. Changes to the itinerary

There is no fixed itinerary and that is the point of a charter. The captain and the surf guide decide the route each day based on swell, wind, tide and safety. We may change or shorten any part of the route, or move between island groups, without that being a change to your booking.

7. If we have to cancel

If we cancel a trip before departure for a reason within our control, you may choose a full refund or a transfer to another departure. If a trip is cut short for reasons of safety, weather, mechanical failure or an act of government, we will refund the unused nights on a pro rata basis where we are able to.

8. Conduct aboard

The captain has final authority on the vessel. Illegal substances are strictly forbidden, and penalties in Indonesia are severe. We may end a guest's trip without refund for conduct that endangers the vessel, the crew or other guests.

9. Liability

We are responsible for providing the charter described in your confirmation with reasonable skill and care. We are not liable for missed flights, delays outside our control, lost or damaged personal equipment, or injury arising from surfing and other activities you choose to take part in.

10. Law

These terms are governed by Indonesian law and any dispute is subject to the courts of Indonesia.

A note on this page

This is a working draft prepared from how the trips actually operate. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Before this page goes live, a lawyer should check it, and the deposit amount, the balance due date and the governing law clause need to be confirmed and filled in.
